The Humane Society of Southern Arizona, in partnership with Donorcharm, celebrates the conclusion of March Muttness 2024, a monumental event that rallied 38 shelters nationwide and successfully raised over $430,000. Born from the urgent need to continue fundraising efforts during the 2020 pandemic, this year’s bracket-style competition not only highlighted the dedication of animal lovers across the country but also underscored the innovative approaches to supporting the welfare of homeless pets.

The tournament was marked by the remarkable achievement of the Yakima Humane Society, which emerged as national champions by raising $71,947 in the climactic final round against Stray Rescue of St. Louis, contributing to their overall impressive total of more than $135,000. This victory is a testament to the power of community collaboration in advancing animal welfare services.

Jeff Boyd, the executive director of Yakima, emphasized the profound impact of these funds, which will significantly bolster their spay and neuter clinic, shelter operations, and various programs. Boyd also shared their ambitious vision for the future, highlighting plans for a much-needed shelter remodel to enhance capacity and improve the quality of housing for the animals.

“Not only are we going to be able to invest in the spay and neuter clinic and open up a bunch of more days, but we’re also going to be able to invest into our shelter as well and the many programs we have there,” said Yakima executive director Jeff Boyd.

The competitive spirit of the event was further enriched by the generous contributions from corporate partners. Brutus Bone Broth’s participation during power hours offered a nutritional boost to pets’ welfare, aligning seamlessly with the event’s mission. Meanwhile, Bazaar Models elevated the fundraising efforts with professional marketing videos for round winners, effectively engaging communities with compelling narratives and visuals.

“At Bazaar Models, we understand that every animal has a story worth telling. We donated our services because we believe in the power of storytelling to inspire action and connect hearts,” remarked a Bazaar spokesperson.

An inventive addition to this year’s event allowed donors to personalize their contributions with basketball-themed trading cards featuring photos of their furry friends. This unique touch generated hundreds of trading cards, adding a deeply personal element to the tournament and strengthening the bond between donors, their pets, and the cause.

With the success of March Muttness 2024, the event stands as a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when communities unite for the welfare of animals in need.
